SUMMARY:What drives women into poverty?
DESCRIPTION:Following on from our webinar on Child Poverty (October 2024) and to coincide with Challenge Poverty Week in England and Wales (12 – 18 October 2026)\, the Social Responsibility Committee of the NBCW is hosting a webinar on Tuesday 13 October 2026 on What drives Women into Poverty\, shining the spotlight on women in poverty. \n\n\n\nPoverty is the ‘inability within society to meet minimum needs owing to a lack of material resources’\, often as a result of the vicissitudes of life suchas job loss\, health problems within the family\, precarious employment and the increase in the cost of living. This event focuses on two frequently overlooked areas\, which are also major contributors to such poverty: Unpaid Care and Coercive Control. \n\n\n\nThe event will be chaired by Jenny Hayward-Jones (CAFOD)\, and will feature presentations from experts in the field Emily Holzhausen CBE (Carers UK) and Dr Susan Longhurst (St Mary’s University Twickenham)\, who will share their insights and experiences. There will also be an opportunity for participants to discuss these issues with each other and explore ways on how we can help. \n\n\n\nJoin us here: \n\n\n\nTopic: What drives women in Poverty?Time: Oct 13\, 2026 07:00 PM London \n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meetinghttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81038417933?pwd=hmnliWRjogO0vFqc3wMLtiJGOwjMB8.1 \n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 810 3841 7933Passcode: 015176 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nWelcome & prayer \n\n\n\nO Lord\, open my eyes that I may see the needs of others.Open my ears that I may hear their cries.Open my heart so that they need not be without succour.Let me not be afraid to defend the weak because of the anger of the strong\,nor be afraid to defend the poor because of the anger of the rich.Show me where love and hope and faith are needed\,and use me to bring them to those places. And so\, Lord\,open my eyes and my ears that I may this day be able to do some work of peace for you.Amen \n\n\n\n(Alan Paton\, South African educator and writer\, 1903 – 1988) \n\n\n\nIntroductions \n\n\n\nPresentation: Constraints affecting women as unpaid carers and how they impact onwomen –  Emily Holzhausen CBE\, Carers UK \n\n\n\nQuestions for discussion: \n\n\n\n1. Name one thing which would make the most difference for women who provide unpaid care to disabled or older relatives? \n\n\n\n2. Baroness Casey is conducting a Big Care Conversation about what care families should‘reasonably be considered to provide’. Where\, do you think\, this boundary lies? How does it affect women in particular? How does better formal care and support prevent women’s poverty and what changes would you like to see? \n\n\n\nPresentation: Coercive control – Research on Domestic Abuse and Catholic Annulment – Dr Susan Longhurst\, St Mary’s University Twickenham \n\n\n\nQuestions for discussion: \n\n\n\n1. What questions should this research ask that we have not yet thought of? \n\n\n\n2. What would make the annulment process feel safer for a woman who has experiencedabuse\, and who in the parish or diocese should she be able to turn to along the way? \n\n\n\n3. For a woman who has experienced abuse\, what would justice from the Church look like\,and is it the same as receiving a declaration of nullity? \n\n\n\nConclusion \n\n\n\nVote of thanks

SUMMARY:Embracing New Life – Pregnancy\, Birth & Motherhood in Faith
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Emma O’Connell \n\n\n\nNB This event was originally scheduled for 24th February \n\n\n\nThe National Board of Catholic Women is launching a new way of accompanying women. One that honours the depth\, complexity\, and beauty of women’s lives. \n\n\n\nCatholic Women Walking with Women: A Faith Journey Through Life’s Seasons is a year-long webinar series designed to meet women where they truly are\, in the real circumstances and rhythms of life\, and to explore how God walks with us in every season. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis session features Emma O’Connell as she speaks on: \n\n\n\n\nThe spiritual significance of pregnancy and motherhood\n\n\n\nCatholic teachings on life and parenting\n\n\n\nFinding strength in prayer and the sacramental life\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Walking with Women:\n\n\n\nGod is already at work in the lives of women; at every age\, every stage\, and every experience. The Church is called to walk alongside women as they discover His presence. \n\n\n\nWomen’s faith journeys are not linear. They move through transitions\, joys\, losses\, questions\, and new beginnings. Each stage shapes our sense of identity\, vocation\, and relationship with God. This initiative seeks to create a place where women can reflect on: \n\n\n\n\nWhere is God in this moment of my life?\n\n\n\nHow is this stage shaping my faith\, my relationships\, my purpose?\n\n\n\nWhere have I found grace\, strength\, challenge\, or consolation?\n\n\n\n\nAcross the twelve months\, the series accompanies women from young adulthood to later life: exploring love\, motherhood\, work\, grief\, purpose\, menopause\, caregiving\, single life\,grandparenting\, retirement\, and the search for meaning in changing circumstances. \n\n\n\nIt makes space for experiences often held in silence: miscarriage\, infertility\, loneliness\, vocational uncertainty\, and the longing for community. \n\n\n\nEach webinar will feature guest speakers (theologians\, pastoral leaders\, Catholic authors\, and everyday women sharing experiences)\, guided reflections\, Q&A discussions\, networking\, and prayerful moments.
