Members of the National Board of Catholic Women are involved this week in leading prayer services across the country witnessing to the importance of Christian unity and ecumenism. This year the theme for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity week is: “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling.” (Ephesians 4:4). The resources have been prepared by the Armenian Orthodox, Armenian Catholic and evangelical churches; these can be found on the Churches Together website.
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity emphasizes that all Christians, though diverse in practice, are united as members of the Body of Christ under his leadership. It highlights our shared faith and the common hope in the promise of resurrection.
The prayers of the Armenian churches focus on the words of St Paul found in Ephesians 4:1-13. Each day a different theme leads worshipers deeper into the theology of hope contained in the promise of resurrection. Ephesians 4:4 summarises the teachings of Paul about unity, emphasising here, too, that the followers of Christ represent ‘one body and one Spirit’, united in a single hope. The prayers are beautiful and worthy of inclusion in private devotion.
