A tribute to Sister Ann Stafford

The National Board of Catholic Women was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Sister Ann Stafford CJ. She was an inspiring woman, and we will miss her twinkling Irish eyes and musical, lilting voice.

Last year, we were so privileged when she joined the National Board of Catholic Women’s book club for their discussions on the life of Mary Ward. Sr. Ann’s knowledge of her foundress’s life and the background of Catholic Recusancy, against which her ministry to women took place, enriched our understanding of the difficulties that women faced then, and still do face now, to do “Great Things”. Above all, Sr Ann inspired hope as we continue to shape the course of women’s ministry.

May her soul rest in peace in her beloved Irish soil. And may our Blessed Lord enfold her in his embrace as she shares in the eternal banquet.

During our discussions, Sister Ann introduced us to many of the sayings of Mary Ward, and I can imagine her echoing Mary’s words, which were said as she approached death: “O fie, fie! What? Still look sad? Come, let us rather sing and praise God joyfully for all his loving kindness.”

So let us praise and thank God for her life. She truly was a woman of great faith, joy and love.
