Written by On 4 April, over 100 people gathered in Middlesbrough for a powerful and thought-provoking event titled “Say NO to Assisted Suicide”, featuring keynote speakers Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and Alithon Williams. Organised with the support of Bishop Terry Drainey, the event brought together clergy, lay leaders, and concerned citizens to explore the grave concerns surrounding proposed assisted suicide legislation.
Baroness Grey-Thompson, a crossbench peer in the House of Lords, disability rights campaigner, and one of Britain’s most celebrated Paralympic athletes, delivered a compelling address. She highlighted the risks such legislation poses, particularly to vulnerable people, and the potential erosion of trust in healthcare. Alithon Williams, along with Terry Graham of SPUC, Fr Richard Marsden, Margaret Clark (NBCW), Anna Preddy (SVP), and other women from the Diocese, added depth and urgency to the evening through discussion and reflection. Fr Dominique was also present, though not pictured.
Attendees were strongly encouraged to take immediate action by writing to, emailing, or phoning their MPs to express opposition to the Bill. Personal, direct communication was emphasised as a powerful tool for change. Above all, the call to pray fervently for guidance and courage in the defence of life was at the heart of the evening.
In a recent development, the next reading of the Assisted Dying Bill has been deferred until May, signalling increased nervousness from the government and intensified campaigning. Now more than ever, your voice matters.
