Some NCBW members were able to attend this timely and well-organised Centre for Catholic Social Thought and Practice (CCSTP) study day on Tuesday 16th June 2026.
The superb speakers, all theologians and academics, were
- Dr. Samuel Tranter
- Dr. Ausin Ivereigh
- Dr. Amy Daughton
- Prof. Carmody Grey
The moderator was Prof. Anna Rowlands
The focus was the themes of the Pope’s first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, its relationship with Laudato Si’, the increasing impact of technology on all our lives and the response of the faithful.
Some of the discussions revolved around disarming AI, and what might have been missing from the encyclical. The event provided good opportunities to ask questions and network.
NBCW members who were unable to attend will be able to hear the speaker inputs which will soon be shared on the CCSTP YouTube channel.
We were also given a copy of Caritas Social Action Network publication “The Dignity of Workers in the 21st Century“, which also contained a contribution from Dr. Amy Daughton, Associate Professor of Catholic Social Teaching at Birmingham University and friend of NBCW.
As a total newbie to both NBCW and CCSTP I felt very welcomed at this event and Saturday’s conference. I have learned much but realise how much more there is to learn and understand.
In a video released on the same day of the proceedings of 10th Austrian World Summit, Pope Leo reminded the audience that in Magnifica Humanitas he had highlighted the importance of “the equal dignity of all human beings and the value of fundamental human rights, both of which can be adequately ensured through the proper implementation of the principles of the common good, the universal destination of goods, subsidiarity, solidarity and social justice.” Emphasising the key principles of Catholic Social Teaching, which protect the human person.
Furthermore, like his predecessor Pope Francis, Pope Leo also showed his concern for protection of our common home: “These essential personal and social matters are intimately connected to the climate crisis, which as I said, is one manifestation and a critical one – of the wider socio-economic crisis”.
We cannot ignore his plea for agency and wisdom in how we use AI so that it protects the dignity of the person and protects the Environment.
I am looking forward to continuing to develop together our understanding of Magnifica Humanitas.
Many thanks,
